VERDICT ON THE VERSAILLES TREATY
The Peace Conference at Versailles, held in the palace’s Hall of Mirrors, opened on the 18th January 1919. This dealt with Germany, but four other treaties were also held, named (like Versailles itself), after Paris suburbs. St. Germain was concerned with Austria; Trianon with Hungary; Neuilly with Bulgaria and the Balkans; and Sèvres with Turkey and the Middle East in general. Each imposed the loss of territory; limitations on military hardware; and (in certain cases), the payment of reparations.
