THE AIM of timewisetraveller.co.uk/ww1 is to provide a good chronological account of the war,

comprising all areas of the conflict. In covering the subject matter, every attempt has been made:

THE GUIDE

TO RETURN TO THE MENU CLICK HERE

To make the text easy to read, and to provide sufficient coverage of each topic.

To include images and incidental features in order to add interest to each article.

To produce maps designed to assist in the understanding of each military action.

THE DATELINE covers the entire war. It is easy to follow and contains three types of entries:

1. The ones in red bold (The Battle of the Somme, for example) are the major

events of the war. An expansion of this entry can be obtained by clicking on the title.

2. The ones in red but not in bold (The sinking of the SS Sussex, for example), are

concerned with the war, but are of minor importance. These are not expandable.

3. The ones in green (an entry about Charlie Chaplin, for example) are events taking place at the time. These cover a wide range of subjects and are not expandable.

For some, just the Dateline might well provide all the information required. However, if you are keen to obtain a much wider knowledge of the war (the real aim of this work), then (as noted at No.1 above) the major entries can be easily expanded by clicking on the highlighted word or phrase.

EIGHT FRONTS were in action during in the First World War (shown below), and each of these can be individually followed by clicking on the PINK LINK at the end of each article. Also available, however, is a link that enables you to return to the Dateline should you wish to look at another theatre of war, or study the entire conflict chronologically.

THE INDEX enables you to obtain information on a particular battle or event, such as the Battle of the Marne. This is accessed by selecting a particular letter, and then scrolling down to find and click on the required subject (e.g. Marne,The Battle of the). Major entries are bolder in size and have their own article, whilst minor subjects are pinpointed within the text of the appropriate page.

Acknowledgements

I am most grateful to all members of my family for their interest and support over the years I have spent producing Timewise Traveller, especially my dear wife, Peggy, and my darling daughter Carena Joy. And for his work in transferring this history onto the World Wide Web, I must thank and congratulate my dear friend and IT specialist Paul Hutchings (paul@mediamanor.com). His has been a long and demanding task, superbly accomplished.

Timewise Traveller is a free non-profit resource. However, if you have found it of interest/value, and would like to show your appreciation, we would welcome any contribution to Cancer Research UK. The TT stands, of course for Timewise Traveller but, appropriately enough, it is also the initials of our dear daughter-in law, Tracy, who died of cancer, aged 45, in June 2014, and on whose behalf this request is made.

It has taken me over three years to produce this comprehensive history of the the First World War, and I hope you will find it of some value. If you are interested in history generally, kindly note that I have another work on the Net: timewisetraveller.co.uk. This is a chronological account from the reign of William the Conqueror to the death of Queen Victoria, studied via the 35 reigns. Apart from political affairs, this work includes all the major disciplines (literature, music, art, science, medicine and philosophy etc.) from across the world. If you find these works of interest, I would be most grateful if you were to encourage others to become “Timewise Travellers”!
